Thursday 9th January - walk ***** – Dedham to Flatford – sunny and cold.

With wall to wall sunshine forecast but a tad on the chilly side we decided to drive over to Dedham for a walk to Flatford, I had hoped it was going to be frosty for the photos but there was hardly any, in fact we woke to cloud in Felixstowe which cleared quickly! We took a picnic today and Mag made tuna pasta for a change, with no ice to clear off the van we set off fairly early arriving at Dedham Mill at 10.30 with the Stour high and racing past with loads of flood water so it was definitely a day for wellies! We set off past the boat hire jetty which was under water and onto the flood plan with loads of standing floodwater, frozen over in places too, we had to walk away from the river to keep out of the water and on reaching the gate where the cattle usually are we could not get through as the flood was too deep so headed away from the river and found a lovely raised tree lined footpath with loads of hedgerow birds coming out near Fen Bridge, there was no way you could access Flatford by crossing the bridge so headed up the hill spotting two kingfishers whizz past. It was then along the narrow country lane, past the National Trust car park which was pretty full with mainly people using the riverside café as walking options were very limited due to flooding! We went to check Willie Lotts cottage and the old mill getting some nice pics before returning back over the main bridge, Mag fed the ducks before having our yummy picnic as the noisy water rushed around the mill pool! It was lovely sitting in the sunshine watching the world go by and spoke to a few nice people too. We talked to two ladies with two young children one in a buggy who waded waded through some deep water to get to Flatford from Dedham so we know we could get back that way but the path was blocked for a bit so we had to walk across the long concrete sluice! We then had to do some more wading as the farm track was under water but we reached fields and the path was good, we spotted a heron and I got a nice pic of a row of tree reflections which was then on BBC’s Look East, my 4th day on TV in a row. By this time my heel was really playing up and the last mile was hard going! We were pleased to get back to van but we did walk round to the lock in the mill pool to watch the watch rush past, then home for a welcome cuppa and light the fire, going to be cold tonight down to minus 6! What a top day we had splashing about in floodwater:)
